Nets Arena & Atlantic Yards Development

:: POSITION STATEMENT - STATEMENT TO COMMUNITY REGARDING THE PROPOSED MOVE OF THE NETS BASKETBALL TEAM TO BROOKLYN

:: AMICUS BREIF

:: PROSPECT HEIGHTS SURVEY RESPONSE

Analysis
The project brings much needed business, employment and housing opportunities to an area plagued by astronomical unemployment and poverty rates. The project also brings a professional sports presence back to Brooklyn. The Arena will complement the existing cultural assets in the area, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Prospect Park, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Brooklyn Children’s Museum and more.

Response

BUILD has endeavored to educate the community about the potential benefits of the project by bringing much needed economic revitalization through development. BUILD has generated a Guiding Principles Agreement to define strategies, projects and initiatives to ensure that those community residents most in need of opportunities engendered in the project have equitable access to those opportunities. Without an agreement where the developer and community are working in partnership, those existing residents are among the most economically vulnerable (yet stand to gain from this project) can be abused, further marginalized and pushed out of the community by this project.
